Kahlil Joseph: Double Conscience
“Kahlil Joseph: Double Conscience” is an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, centered on Joseph’s two-channel film m.A.A.d., a split-screen portrait of contemporary Black life in and around Compton. Set to music from Kendrick Lamar’s album good kid, m.A.A.d city, the immersive installation layers lush, melancholic imagery with the visual language of hip-hop videos. It moves between scenes of exuberant youth, everyday ritual, and sudden eruptions of danger or loss. The exhibition forms a bridge between music video culture and contemporary art institutions, and stands as an influential early museum-scale presentation of Joseph’s work.
